After eight years of bringing comfort and joy to patients at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, Holly the Labrador Retriever has completed her final shift as the hospital's unofficial "Cuddle Manager."

The beloved therapy dog marked her 500th hospital visit on Monday, April 15th, with an emotional retirement celebration organized by the hospital staff. Throughout her tenure, Holly has provided cuddles and comfort to thousands of patients, families, and healthcare workers.

Holly's journey began when her owner Barry noticed her exceptionally gentle nature and registered her with Pets as Therapy, a national charity. "It's a sad day in many ways," Barry reflected on Holly's retirement. "But I think the time has come for her to put her paws up and smell the biscuits!"

The impact of Holly's presence at Alder Hey has been remarkable, according to Chief Nursing Officer Nathan Askew. "She's probably the most famous person here! Patients returning for repeat treatments always ask if Holly is in today," he said. "She helps people relax, puts them at ease, and brings a sense of normality during their care and treatment."

Holly's distinguished career includes several notable achievements. She was honored with a CBeebies Hero Award and made a special appearance on Operation Ouch! In 2022, she was part of the hospital's volunteer team that received the prestigious Queen's Award for Voluntary Service.

As Holly retires from her role as Cuddle Manager, she leaves behind a legacy of thousands of smiles, countless wagging tails, and immeasurable comfort provided to the Alder Hey community over her eight years of dedicated service.
