The Birmingham Zoo has welcomed its newest resident - Spruce, a young mountain lion cub rescued from Portola Valley, California. The cub arrived last week after a cross-country journey coordinated between the Oakland and Birmingham Zoos.
Spruce was found in January in San Mateo County along with his siblings Fern and Thistle after their mother was reportedly struck by a vehicle. The cubs received initial care at Oakland Zoo's Veterinary Hospital before plans were made for their permanent placement.
The decision to relocate Spruce to Birmingham was based on his compatibility with Juniper, a female rescue cub already residing at the facility. Early observations show the pair bonding well through play, cuddling and vocalizations.
"He and Juniper have already had positive interactions under the guidance of Birmingham Zoo and Oakland Zoo animal care professionals," said Chris Pfefferkorn, President and CEO of the Birmingham Zoo.
FedEx supported the relocation effort by donating transportation costs as part of their "Delivering for Good" initiative. Oakland Zoo staff prepared Spruce for the journey using positive reinforcement training to acclimate him to his travel crate.
The cubs currently reside in a night house as they adjust to their new environment. They will soon move into the zoo's Wojciechowski Cougar Crossing Habitat, which opened to visitors in March. The modern facility is designed to allow the cats to display natural behaviors.
"Guests will learn about these amazing animals and their species, and we look forward to watching them thrive together at the Birmingham Zoo," Pfefferkorn added.
While Spruce settles into his new home, his siblings Fern and Thistle remain at Oakland Zoo awaiting permanent placement. The zoos plan to share updates on the cubs' progress through their social media channels.
