Seven dogs from fire-ravaged Southern California have found temporary refuge in Portland thanks to the quick action of local rescue organization One Tail at a Time PDX. The dogs arrived Sunday afternoon at Troutdale airport, transported by Wings of Rescue, a nonprofit that helps airlift rescued animals across state lines.
The emergency relocation comes as California shelters face overwhelming capacity due to ongoing catastrophic fires forcing widespread evacuations. By taking in existing shelter dogs, Portland rescuers are helping create space for newly displaced animals in Southern California.
"Having organizations step in to help with animals already in Southern California shelters creates vital space for new arrivals," explained Juli Zagrans, executive director of One Tail at a Time PDX. The Portland-based no-kill rescue operates through a network of volunteer foster homes rather than kennels.
When the urgent request came from California, seven Portland foster families immediately volunteered to open their homes. Within two hours of landing, all dogs were settled with their temporary families.
Among the new arrivals is Venice, a four-month-old puppy being fostered by Natalie Mesa-Smith, who is hosting her 14th foster dog. "She was already ready to party," Mesa-Smith said of Venice's quick adjustment. "She is a napper and a player, so there's those very happy peaceful moments and the very chaotic moments that come with puppies."
The rescue provides all necessary supplies and covers veterinary costs until permanent homes are found through their Northeast Portland adoption center. After completing medical checkups, all seven dogs will be available for adoption at an event this Saturday.
One Tail at a Time PDX typically cares for 30-40 dogs at any given time and plans to accept more California rescues soon. As Zagrans notes, their mission focuses on "providing them with a safe home with the medical care they need, and really the chance to have the life that they deserve."
