A San Antonio couple turned their Thanksgiving into a heartwarming rescue mission, spending 12 hours saving a nervous pit bull and her nine newborn puppies from a precarious situation on the city's South side.

The couple discovered the nervous mother dog hiding in a shed hole and patiently worked from early morning until evening to gain her trust. "We were there from 7:45 to 4:15 with many failed attempts. She always kept an eye on us," shared the rescuer on social media.

After taking a brief break to give the dog space and tend to their own Thanksgiving preparations, the couple returned around 6 PM. Through careful maneuvering, they managed to secure the mother with a leash. The puppies proved to be the key to gaining her cooperation - once they began moving the pups toward their truck, the protective mother willingly followed.

The couple aptly named the mother "Momma Goose" after their lengthy "wild goose chase," while the puppies were collectively dubbed the "Peanut Gang" in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Their act of kindness resonated strongly with social media users, who rallied to support the rescue effort. Within a week, the community raised over $1,000 to help care for the dogs. The funds enabled the purchase of essential supplies, including a comfortable bed and other necessities during Black Friday sales.

The timing of this rescue is particularly meaningful given the current capacity crisis facing San Antonio's animal shelters. The couple plans to foster the dogs until permanent homes can be found, stepping up when local shelters are already stretched thin.

Regular updates posted online show Momma Goose adapting well to her temporary home. Though naturally protective of her puppies, she has grown comfortable enough to accept food and affection from her rescuers.

"The world isn't what it should be, but that doesn't preclude us from doing what we can to make it better," reflected the rescuer, emphasizing that sharing their story was about inspiring others rather than seeking donations.

This Thanksgiving rescue story stands as a testament to how individual acts of compassion, supported by community generosity, can make a real difference in addressing local animal welfare challenges.
