As the Palisades fire continues to spread across Los Angeles County, reaching over 2,900 acres, one local veterinarian has stepped up to provide emergency shelter for displaced pets.

Dr. Annie Harvilicz, owner of Animal Wellness Centers in Marina del Rey and Laguna Vista Veterinary Center in Harbor City, opened her facilities to house animals after receiving a personal request from her brother to care for his pets during evacuation.

"I have an empty old vet hospital in Marina del Rey. I am happy to house any animals that need to be evacuated," Harvilicz posted on Facebook Tuesday morning. The response was immediate and overwhelming, with both pet owners seeking help and volunteers offering assistance.

Currently, the veterinary hospitals are caring for approximately 20 dogs, 20 cats, and a rabbit named Oreo. Harvilicz expects these numbers to increase as the fire situation develops. She has even welcomed some of the displaced dogs into her own home.

"The majority of people reaching out are multiple pet owners," explained Harvilicz. "They might be able to take one dog or cat to a hotel but not two or three."

Beyond providing shelter, the facilities offer medical treatment for injured pets and provide food and bedding for those in need. However, not all rescue attempts have been successful. Harvilicz recounted a heartbreaking incident where she attempted to arrange transport for nine donkeys, but the owner was forced to flee before help could arrive.

Pet owners requiring emergency shelter for their animals can contact the Marina del Rey location at (310) 450-7387 or the Harbor City facility at (310) 737-8600.
