As Mount Spurr shows signs of an impending eruption, Anchorage residents are racing to protect not just themselves, but also their four-legged companions from potential volcanic ashfall.
Located about 80 miles west of Alaska's largest city, Mount Spurr's expected eruption has triggered a surge in sales of protective pet gear. Local pet store AK Bark reported record-breaking sales in March, with over 500 pairs of specialized dog goggles – ranging from high-end Rex Specs at $85 to the more affordable "Doggles" – flying off the shelves.
"March is our biggest month on record," said Mark Robokoff, owner of AK Bark. "We needed to call in reserves." The store has also presold 1,800 dog respirators in various sizes.
City officials have specifically addressed pet safety in their volcanic preparedness guidelines, recommending keeping animals indoors and using protective gear when outdoor activities are necessary. The main concern is volcanic ash, which contains sharp particles of rock and natural glass that can harm paws, eyes, and respiratory systems.
Pet owners like Alliana Salanguit and Jesslin Wooliver are taking these warnings seriously. Their three-year-old dog Iroh now sports heart-shaped pink goggles and a protective mask. The couple uses treat-based training to help Iroh adjust to the new gear.
"We're trying to get him not to associate the goggles with torture and pain, but more with treats," explained Wooliver. Their approach includes rewarding Iroh with freeze-dried Alaska salmon during mask fittings.
The last major eruption affecting Anchorage occurred in 1992, making this potential event particularly noteworthy for the city's residents. While earthquakes and wildfires are familiar challenges, volcanic eruptions near major population centers are rare occurrences that require special preparation – even for pets.
Local animal control spokesman Joel Jorgensen emphasizes the importance of paw protection and recommends canine respirators when available. The combination of practical safety measures and stylish pet accessories has created an unexpected trend in Anchorage, where dog goggles are transforming from occasional fashion statements to necessary safety equipment.
